There are probably a lot of other places you could be right this moment.
So I appreciate that you landed here, in all of the vast internet universe.
This project is definitely not about critiquing or even evaluating films. There are any number of other people doing that far better than I could. Instead this is about a kind of advocacy for the movies that I believe are worth the time it takes to watch them. My intention is to give you reasons to do just that. In the same way that I have a few people that I rely upon to point me in the direction of interesting books or music, my goal is to provide that kind of resource to people who just don't have the time to sift through the limitless number of films that are available.
I have spent most of my fifty odd years on this earth watching, reading about, talking about, writing about and working in and on films. Currently I am writing for Dear Cast and Crew and I also just recently spent two glorious summers in the company of my good friend Di Golding doing some reviews for CBC radio in Ottawa. As well, and perhaps most importantly in this context, I spent twelve years working at an independent video store in Ottawa. I spent a lot of time and energy trying to talk people into stepping half a foot outside of their comfort zone. And more often than not they were happy they did.
So here is to that first step.
"And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!"
